The Duttons faced new challenges at the beginning of the 20th century, including increasing western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. While the Great Depression began in America as early as 1929, in Montana it began early. The Great Depression began in Montana in 1918, nearly ten years before the rest of the nation. While the rest of America prospered, Montana struggled. Between drought and reduced demand for agricultural products due to the end of the “Great War” (also known as World War I, from 1914 to 1918), many farmers suffered greatly. This resulted in Montana farmers defaulting on their loans during the war, leading to widespread bank failures across the state. Between 1921 and 1925, half of Montana’s farmers lost their land. By 1925, 70,000 of the 82,000 settlers left Montana. In addition, 200 banks in Montana went bankrupt. Not only did the drought affect crops, there was also a plague of locusts and cattle fell victim to the contagion. Featured in: Indiana Jones & The Last Jedi (2023). Dame Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Sounds like a recipe for success. And it is. The Duttons are once again struggling to maintain their farm life in Montana. Patriarch (Harrison Ford) Jacob Dutton is fighting essentially the same battles that John Dutton (Costner) did in Yellowstone. Very entertaining. There are two other very interesting storylines. One of them is Spencer Dutton. A disillusioned World War I veteran. Now a hunter in Africa. Spencer meets an English girl he liked. Suddenly the two learned that they had to travel from Mogadishu in Somalia to Montana. Should be easy… The second arc is about a school where Native American girls are abused by Catholic priests and nuns. That part was highly unpleasant to watch. There was a bit of revenge going on that made it somewhat watchable… I usually rate TV shows after a season. Not this time. It wasn’t like the last episode. To explain why would be to spoil it.
