It follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The second of a two-part feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical… Wicked was first announced to be split into two films in April 2022, with composer Stephen Schwartz explaining: "The truth is, we were trying for a while to make it one film (which) required us to cut or omit things that we wanted to include and that we thought fans of the show and the story would appreciate." He added: "We found it very difficult to get through ‘Defying Gravity’; without interruption. That song was written specifically to bring down the curtain, and any scene that followed it without interruption just seemed extremely anticlimactic.".
